The Story

  • This album occupies a unique place in the Bill Evans discography. It is the only album that documents the much too short stay of drummer Jack deJohnette in a trio. The trio's appearance on this album earned them a Grammy in 1969 for the best jazz instrumental album.

When this set was recorded in Montreux on June 15, 1968, Eddie Gomez and Evans played together for two years. Gomez had a different virtuosity than Scott LaFaro in Evans' classic trio five years earlier, but he was clearly the best bassist Evans had worked with since LaFaro's tragic death. The groove between the two was deep and at the same time pleasant, so comfortable that Evans did something in this set he had never done before, at least on one recording: He put Gomez in the foreground for a whole piece, the almost seven minute long "Embraceable You".

As Gene Lees' Liner Notes describe, Evans' appearance at the renowned Montreux Casino nightclub jazz festival, one of Switzerland's hippest resorts, was one of his best. He and Gomez played with more exuberance, more joie de vivre and more drive. Evans' brooding, introspective musical side has been on records for a long time; the positive side was heard too little, but it is here on this album.

At the end of each number, the audience exploded with applause that was so stormy and expansive that it had to be heavily edited for the album. Enjoy this sparkling Bill Evans piano performance made even more delightful by Bernie Grundman's professional mastering of the original analog tape. For this edition there can be only the best vinyl pressing - a 200 gram super quiet, noble sounding record from Quality Record Pressings, manufacturer of the world's best sounding LPs. First class and on the highest level, this album will be an excellent addition to your record collection.
