The driving force of lead singer, songwriter and guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt has made Opeth one of the most successful Swedish metal bands of all time. On their 9th studio album Watershed they combine death metal elements with a progressive structured sound, which was celebrated by fans and critics, not least because of the ingenious changes between slow melodic parts and dark heavy riffs.Mikael Åkerfeldt's vocals, which have matured audibly over the years and alternate between folky-clean parts and heavy death growls, also play their part in the album's success. The songs included offer the absolute extremes of punchy guitar and drum driven sounds, to dreamy keyboard and synth sounds, with a wall of guitar riffs with fast drums creating a depressingly doomy atmosphere on the more brutal tracks.Watershed is one of the strongest and most impressive albums from the entire Opeth catalogue. Compared to the CD, the LP version was provided with an additional track Derelict Herds from the beginning.
